EU Fails to Set Timeline for Ukraine Aid Request Amid Grain Export Disruptions

The European Commission has yet to set a timeline for deciding on Ukraine's request for €220 million in emergency assistance to farmers, as well as broader support for the export or storage of Ukrainian grain.

According to Report's European bureau, EU spokesperson Louise Bogey said that before making a decision, they need to conduct additional analysis, including assessing the harvest and available storage capacity in Ukraine.

The €220 million aid request from Ukraine aims to support farmers affected by disruptions to exports, including subsidizing bank loans so producers can store grain rather than sell it at unfavorable prices. However, the EU has made no commitments to increase quotas or expand 'solidarity lanes' established after the start of the full-scale war.

The situation is complicated due to Ukraine's grain exports facing several challenges, including ships stopped entering ports in the Odesa region following a Russian missile strike at the end of July. This has resulted in significantly lower export volumes, raising concerns that storage facilities could become overcrowded.
