EU Finance Ministers Push for Windfall Tax on Oil Companies Amid War-Driven Profits
EU finance ministers from six countries are pushing for a bloc-wide windfall tax on oil companies amid surging profits due to the war in the Middle East. In an open letter to Ireland's finance minister, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, they urged the introduction of an 'EU-wide framework to tax windfall profits.'
The signatories, including Germany, Italy, Austria, Poland, Portugal, and Spain's economy minister, pointed out that oil companies are enjoying high profitability and margins on refined products, exceeding the rise in crude oil prices. They also noted that the current supply shock is causing growing discontent about the rise in the cost of living.
The letter references lessons learned from a temporary levy introduced in 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. While the EU has not yet signaled plans to introduce a new levy, energy giants have posted massive earnings since the US and Israel launched military operations against Iran in February, severely disrupting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz transit route.
