EU Gas Supply Remains Stable Despite Lower Storage Levels

The European Union's gas supply remains stable despite storage levels being below historical averages, according to a recent assessment by the European Commission. The Commission's Gas Coordination Group met on September 24 to evaluate current gas market conditions and winter preparedness.

Although storage levels are lower than usual, the group concluded that supplies remain stable due to increased LNG import capacity, diversification of supply sources, and lower gas demand. This resilience is expected to support the EU's gas supply security despite the challenges posed by lower storage levels.

The Commission has also confirmed that applicable EU rules provide protection for supplies to protected customers, including households and essential services, in the event of a major disruption. The next meeting of the Gas Coordination Group, with gas associations participating, is scheduled for October 8, when preliminary findings for the Winter Preparedness Report by ENTSOG will be published.
