EU Imports More Russian Gas Amid Energy Crisis
The European Union's efforts to reduce its dependence on Russian energy resources have hit a snag. According to data from the Center for Energy and Clean Air Research (CREA), EU member states imported 14% more liquefied natural gas from Russia in June than they did a year earlier.
This latest increase undermines the EU's plan to phase out imports of liquefied natural gas from Russia by 2027. The Kremlin's revenue from the sale of raw materials has risen to 60 million euros per day, as reported by Welt am Sonntag.
France purchased the majority of Russian LNG, with the port of Montouar in Brittany receiving four times as much LNG in June as it did in May. This marks a significant increase in Russia's share of EU gas imports, which has remained high since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
