EU Rejects Ukraine's Bid to Renegotiate Export Quotas Amid Economic Strains
The European Union has refused to renegotiate export quotas with Ukraine, according to a spokesperson for the European Commission. This decision comes as Ukraine's economy is strained by Russian strikes, which have damaged its infrastructure and choked off exports via the Black Sea.
Ukraine had sought an increased quota for its bioethanol exports, produced from massive grain harvests. However, the EU has stuck to its revised quota volumes, adopted last year in response to farmer protests over an influx of agricultural goods from Ukraine.
The EU reintroduced quotas for products such as wheat, sugar, and eggs after tariff-free and quota-free access was granted to Ukraine at the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. Trade data so far 'proves the fair and balanced nature' of the revised quota volumes, according to the Commission spokesperson.
