EU Rejects Ukraine's Plea for Quota Renegotiation Amid Trade Strains

The European Union has rejected Ukraine's request to renegotiate export quotas for its agricultural products. The move comes as Ukraine struggles to maintain exports due to damage from Russian strikes and a choke on Black Sea trade.

Ukraine had sought increased access for bioethanol exports, which are produced from grain harvests. However, the EU does not plan to renegotiate export quotas with Ukraine, according to a European Commission spokesperson.

The current quota system was introduced last year in response to farmer protests over an influx of agricultural goods from Ukraine. The quotas cut imports of Ukrainian wheat and sugar compared to the previous quota-free period but represented an increase compared to pre-war levels.
