EU Weighs Delaying Methane Reporting Rules Amid Energy Security Concerns

The European Union is considering delaying methane reporting rules for imported oil and gas by up to one year. The current deadline for the rules, which require foreign producers to monitor and report methane emissions with attached penalties for noncompliance, is January 1, 2027.

EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen stated that officials are exploring whether to postpone the import provisions rather than weaken them. He noted that any postponement should come with conditions, with member states expected to prepare for full implementation once the delay ends.

The move is seen as a response to Europe's ongoing energy security concerns, particularly with supply security again at the top of the agenda this winter following disruptions in global oil and gas flows. Roughly a dozen EU countries, along with the United States, Europe's largest LNG supplier, have urged Brussels to pause or revise the rules.
