EU Worried Over Western Balkans' Growing Dependence on US Gas
The Western Balkans' growing interest in US gas imports has raised concerns among EU officials that the region may become overly dependent on American fossil fuels.
Countries such as Albania, Kosovo, and Bosnia and Herzegovina have expressed interest in purchasing large quantities of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US or building infrastructure to enable its import. They argue that they need the gas as a transitional fuel while reducing imports of Russian energy and coal consumption.
However, EU officials question the necessity or desirability of these projects, citing concerns about increasing dependence on gas imports in the long term, which could jeopardize the region's clean energy goals.
