Europe Aims for 25% Gas Demand Cut with Renewable Energy
The European Union's energy strategy is shifting towards renewable energy as a cornerstone of its energy security. According to a report by IEEFA, accelerating clean energy deployment could reduce EU gas demand by 25 percent by 2030, saving twice the amount of liquefied natural gas (LNG) Europe could potentially import from Qatar.
The REPowerEU Plan, launched in May 2022, aims to reduce fossil fuel imports and expand renewable electricity. Between 2021 and 2024, total EU gas demand declined by 20 percent, with significant reductions across every major sector: households (24%), industry (20%), commercial and public services (19%), and electricity and heat generation (18%).
Renewable technologies such as heat pumps, solar photovoltaic systems, and wind power are already reducing Europe's dependence on imported natural gas. In 2024, these technologies saved approximately 8.8 billion cubic meters of gas, equivalent to nearly two-thirds of all LNG imported from Qatar.
