Europe Gas Prices Soar Amid Strait of Hormuz Uncertainty
Natural gas prices in Europe have risen by about eight percent, reaching nearly $70 per megawatt-hour on the Dutch TTF market. This increase comes as a result of uncertainty over the normalization of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, according to the energy regulator.
The Strait's strategic importance has led Iran and Oman to fail in reaching a final agreement over the weekend, with Tehran renewing its list of demands to Washington. Although a deal is close, Iran has warned that it will not lead to an immediate opening of the Strait.
The uncertainty surrounding the Strait has raised concerns that disruptions to liquefied natural gas shipments could continue, further delaying shipments from major exporters such as Qatar. This has constrained global gas supplies and intensified competition among European and Asian buyers for available quantities of liquefied natural gas.
