Europe Plunges into Gas Storage Crisis Ahead of Winter
Europe is bracing for a gas storage crisis as winter approaches, thanks to the ongoing conflict between Iran and the US/Israel. The war has crippled liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports from Qatar and Asia, causing Europe's LNG imports to skyrocket.
The EU relies heavily on LNG to fill its gas storage, but record-high prices are making it more profitable for commercial gas companies to sell gas rather than store it. As a result, gas storage levels have plummeted to 65%, the lowest in 15 years, and significantly lower than the five-year average of 80%.
Countries such as the Netherlands, Latvia, Belgium, and Germany are struggling with storage levels below 50%, while the UK's storage stands at just 31%. The situation is further exacerbated by heatwaves and droughts that have restricted shipping operations in key energy arteries like the Rhine River.
