Europe Rolls Out Measures to Combat Soaring Energy Prices
European countries are taking measures to combat soaring energy prices that have risen sharply since the war in the Middle East. According to European Commission data, diesel prices across the EU have reached a record high of 2.24 euros per liter, up from 1.59 euros before the conflict.
Twelve member states, including Belgium, Italy, Romania, and Poland, recorded their highest ever prices in September. To mitigate the impact, several countries are introducing price caps or subsidies for fuel and natural gas. Spain has approved a 0.2-euro-per-liter cut in petrol and diesel prices for October, along with a 15 percent cap on natural gas price increases.
Austria will lower mineral oil taxes on petrol and diesel in October and November, while limiting fuel retail margins to help consumers save more than 0.12 euros per liter. In Italy, major fuel retailers have introduced retail price caps covering roughly half of the country's petrol stations.
