Europe Wheat Prices Slide Amid Progress Toward Resuming Grain Exports
The wheat price in Europe dropped on Friday as traders cautiously assessed progress toward resuming grain exports via the Black Sea region. The Euronext exchange in Paris saw a decrease of 0.6 percent, with the price of milling wheat for December delivery dropping to 239 euros per tonne (equivalent to $271.62). This comes after the contract hit a nearly one-month low in the previous session.
The Black Sea Grain Initiative, brokered by Turkey and the United Nations in July 2022, had allowed for the safe export of Ukrainian grain amidst the war. However, Russia withdrew from the agreement in the following year, citing significant obstacles to its own food and fertilizer exports.
Recent months have seen escalated Russian and Ukrainian attacks on each other's grain vessels in the Black Sea, contributing to a rise in global grain prices. In response, the governor of Russia's Krasnodar region declared a state of emergency following Ukrainian drone attacks that disrupted grain export operations, allowing those affected to receive compensation.
