European Farmers Reel from Heatwaves, Wildfires Devastate Crops
European farmers are facing unprecedented challenges due to heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires that have ravaged crops across the continent. The impact is being felt in various sectors, including olive oil, grapes, vegetables, corn, and sunflower seeds.
In Spain, olive oil production declined by 9% in the 2025-26 season, with authorities estimating sufficient reserves to meet demand. However, this summer's wildfires threaten to further reduce production. In Greece, olive oil output dropped 6% to 235,000 tons in the same period, according to EU estimates.
The uncertainty surrounding crop yields is compounded by regional variations and factors such as water availability, heat wave duration, disease outbreaks, and insect infestations. A recent wildfire on Crete's Rethymno region damaged olive groves and farmland, causing widespread concern among farmers.
