European Gas Prices Soar Amid LNG Supply Disruptions
European natural gas prices have reached their highest point since January 2023, trading above EUR65 per megawatt-hour. This surge is attributed to concerns over worldwide LNG availability after a Middle East conflict reduced global shipments by about a fifth and slowed Europe's summer refilling of reserves.
The EU's gas inventories currently stand at roughly 63% capacity, the weakest seasonal reading since 2009 and significantly below typical levels. The European Commission believes that unused LNG import infrastructure and an 80% fill objective will cover winter needs, but Europe is likely to face stiff competition from Asian buyers for spot shipments.
The market's focus has shifted from immediate physical shortages to economic and sanctions fallout from the Iran situation. Indications of improved transit via the Strait of Hormuz and talks about a potential Iran-Oman shipping pact have reduced some supply interruption worries.
