European Gas Prices Soar Amid Middle East LNG Supply Crisis
The European natural gas market has reached its highest levels since early 2023 due to severe constraints in liquefied natural gas deliveries from Middle Eastern producers.
The Dutch TTF benchmark contract for front-month delivery skyrocketed by over 40% in September, peaking at 79.64 euros per megawatt-hour before retreating slightly during Friday's trading session.
The crisis is centered around Qatar, the world's second-largest LNG supplier, which experienced substantial infrastructure damage to its Ras Laffan complex following an Iranian missile attack in March.
This has resulted in approximately 17% of total LNG shipping capacity being eliminated, with QatarEnergy maintaining force majeure declarations on certain contractual deliveries through early November.
