European Gas Prices Soar as Heatwave Meets Geopolitical Tensions
European natural gas markets are facing a double whammy as a brutal summer heatwave and escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East converge. Benchmark TTF natural gas futures have surged past €61 per megawatt-hour on the Dutch hub, reaching peak levels recorded during earlier spikes from conflict.
The combination of soaring air conditioning usage, constrained nuclear production, and choked supply transit routes has caught traders and energy planners off guard. Wholesale gas prices are spiking due to a perfect storm of heatwaves and supply friction, with temperatures topping 42°C in regions like France, Italy, and Spain forcing air-conditioning units to run continuously.
The supply side is under severe strain due to ongoing military strikes and naval blockades around the Strait of Hormuz. Tanker traffic out of major export terminals like Qatar has virtually halted, leaving global buyers scrambling for spot cargoes.
