The price of gold has experienced significant fluctuations in 2026 after hitting a record high early in the year, surpassing $5,000. Last week saw a notable rally, with both gold and silver performing well, according to Goldprice.org. The precious metal's price has dropped from its 10-year high of over $5,300 an ounce by as much as 18%.

Tamer inflation data and declining odds of a Fed rate hike contributed to the rally. Pippa Malmgren, a former Special Assistant to President George W. Bush, notes that investors are attracted to gold due to concerns about fiscal spending and weak economic growth worldwide, implying potential inflation.

Central banks around the world are expanding their gold holdings, with China leading the way in continued buying. This trend signals a loss of confidence in fiat money, further boosting gold's appeal. The PBOC added 19.9 tons in July, its largest month since October 2023 and its 21st straight month of accumulation.

Billionaire hedge fund manager John Paulson believes that gold is only in the early stages of a long-term rally, citing loss of faith in paper currency and runaway government spending.
