European Gas Prices Stabilize Amid Ongoing Strait of Hormuz Tensions
European natural gas prices steadied around €58 per MWh on Tuesday after sliding in the previous session.
The price stability comes as traders closely watched the Middle East negotiations for signs of progress toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway disrupted by conflict between Iran and the US.
President Donald Trump said his latest offer of talks was Iran's 'last chance' to reach a deal and avoid large-scale air strikes. However, Tehran denied holding talks with Washington, though it said discussions with Oman aimed at facilitating shipping through the Strait were making progress.
The conflict has disrupted roughly one-fifth of global LNG supply, intensifying competition between European and Asian buyers for cargoes and hampering Europe's efforts to rebuild gas inventories ahead of winter. As a result, European gas storage levels have fallen to their lowest for this time of year in nearly two decades.
This has heightened concerns over the region's gas supply security as the heating season draws closer. With prices steady but still volatile, traders will be watching closely for any developments that could impact the market.
