European Gas Prices Surge Amid Winter Supply Fears
European natural gas prices have remained above €80 per megawatt-hour (MWh) as of September 19, despite some fluctuations in recent days. The benchmark price at the Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF), a reference point for European gas trading, gained 0.3% to reach $92.95, or approximately €80.545, per MWh.
This week's prices have stayed above the €80 threshold after increasing by 6% on Monday, marking their highest point since the 2022-2023 crisis. The ongoing disruption in Middle Eastern oil and gas supply has contributed to these price increases, as Saudi Arabia closed its main East-West oil pipeline used to circumvent the Strait of Hormuz.
The European Union heads into winter with gas storage at a relatively low level, one of the weakest in twenty years, due to the Middle East war's impact on LNG deliveries from Qatar. This has led to higher competition for global LNG cargoes and tightened the global market, particularly as the northern hemisphere approaches its heating season.
