European Gas Retreats Amid Profit-Taking, Underlying Pressures Remain
European natural gas prices retreated from their highest levels since the 2022-2023 energy crisis, slipping 0.7% to settle near 82.80 euros per megawatt-hour on Tuesday.
The decline was attributed to profit-taking after an extended stretch of volatility rather than any easing in structural pressures driving gas curves higher.
Underlying supply-demand fundamentals remain tight, with European underground storage facilities only about 68% full, trailing the five-year seasonal average by a wide margin at this time of year.
The shortfall leaves power grids across the continent exposed to prolonged interruption in maritime energy flows, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz.
Scheduled maintenance at Norwegian gas production facilities is also contributing to the supply squeeze, temporarily removing another critical source of pipeline flows into European networks.
