European LNG Spot Price Hits Three-Year High Amid Middle East Conflict
The European liquefied natural gas (LNG) spot price has surged to its highest level in over three years, reaching $22.83 per million British thermal units this week.
This significant increase is largely due to the Middle East conflict's impact on global energy supply chains, with blocked transit through the Strait of Hormuz exacerbating market concerns over winter supply tightness.
Energy pricing agency Argus Media reported that LNG spot prices in northwestern Europe have more than doubled compared to last year, while Asian LNG benchmark Platts JKM has climbed 13% in August.
Goldman Sachs warned that European benchmark gas prices would need to rise above 100 euros per megawatt-hour to curb Asian LNG demand, but current contract prices stand at around 66 euros per megawatt-hour, implying substantial further upside.
