European Markets Improve as Oil Falls and Bonds Rise
The European markets are showing signs of improved risk sentiment, driven by a retreat in oil prices and a rise in bond markets. WTI crude oil is down 2.67% to $87.09, contributing to a more favorable outlook for investors. This easing in oil prices, coupled with a lack of direct confrontation between the US and Iran since the UN General Assembly, has supported a positive risk environment.
The EUR/USD pair has rebounded as the French government takes steps to reduce its budget deficit, narrowing the OAT-Bund spread. This spread had peaked at its highest levels since the European debt crisis on Friday but has since seen some improvement due to position squaring and policy adjustments. The French government's plans to restrain spending and raise tax revenues have forced policymakers to change course, potentially setting the stage for a major reversal.
In the cryptocurrency space, Ethereum is consolidating at a major trendline as the Glamsterdam event hits the Sepolia testnet. Meanwhile, Bitcoin has seen a modest gain of 0.47%, reaching $86,144. Gold prices remain rangebound, influenced by the US-Iran stalemate and upcoming CPI data, which is capping the upside.
Other key market movements include a decline in 10-year Treasury yields by 3.4 basis points to 5.273%, with the euro leading and the Japanese yen lagging. Gold is up 0.95% to $4178.54, while European stocks are mostly higher, and S&P 500 futures have risen by 0.46%. The Bank of Japan's governor, Ueda, has indicated that inflation is nearing 2%, keeping a December rate hike firmly in play.
