European Natural Gas Prices Slip Below €78/MWh Amid Winter Supply Worries
European natural gas prices dropped to below €78/MWh on Thursday, but remain near their three-and-a-half-year high. The decline in prices is due to traders reassessing the region's gas supply outlook ahead of the winter season.
The region's gas storage levels are at around 68% capacity, which is among the lowest seen in two decades. This low level of inventory has raised concerns over supply adequacy during the heating season.
Sustained disruptions to LNG supplies from the Persian Gulf and record summer heatwaves have severely constrained efforts to replenish reserves. Additionally, strong demand for gas from Asia and other buyers could lead to increased competition for LNG cargoes when colder weather sets in.
