European Wholesale Electricity Prices Soar Amid Gas Supply Concerns
European wholesale electricity prices have surged to their highest levels since the energy crisis, reaching above €180 per megawatt-hour on the European Energy Exchange for January. This is a significant increase of more than 60% compared to the same period last year.
The main driver behind this rise is the natural gas market, which has been strained due to Europe's struggle to refill storage amid strong competition for supplies. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has reduced gas imports from Qatar, adding pressure to a market heavily reliant on imported liquefied natural gas.
Additionally, France's nuclear fleet has experienced reduced output due to heat and strikes, while low hydropower stocks have further added to the pressure. Higher prices could lead to increased household and business energy bills, as well as exacerbate inflationary pressures in the region.
