Europe's Drought Sparks Global Price Shock in Food Markets

The European drought is having a ripple effect on global food markets, particularly in the Middle East and Gulf regions. The European Commission has cut its forecasts for grain maize and sunflower yields by 6-7%, while winter crops have been revised down by between 1 and 4%. This will impact wheat prices, which are already politically sensitive across the Arab world.

The drought's effects on summer crops like maize and sunflower are particularly concerning. These crops are among the world's principal animal feeds and vegetable oils. When their availability falls, buyers turn to substitutes, leading to increased demand for alternative feed grains and oil sources.

As a result of this shift in global food markets, prices for cereal, sugar, and vegetable oil have increased. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization's global food-price index reached 131.1 points in July, its highest in over three years. The drought is occurring at the same time as geopolitical disruptions, expensive energy, costly fertilizers, and shipping route disruptions.
