Europe's Energy Reserves on Thin Ice Ahead of Winter
Europe's energy reserves are alarmingly fragile heading into winter due to conflicts in the Middle East and Russia tightening global markets for liquefied natural gas (LNG) and heating oil. Natural gas and heating oil account for around 30% and 10%, respectively, of household heating demand in Europe.
The region's reliance on LNG has increased since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, making it vulnerable to supply disruptions. QatarEnergy reported 'extensive damage' after the Ras Laffan Industrial City was hit by Iranian missiles. LNG imports into Europe have slowed sharply since the Iran war, and inventories are at their lowest level for this time of year.
Underground gas storage facilities are currently around 55% full, while LNG imports in July were just 6.3 million tonnes, the lowest since September 2024. The European market is alarmed by low inventories, weak imports, and a deteriorating supply outlook. Benchmark European gas prices rose above €60 per megawatt hour last week.
