Europe's Gas Prices Soar Amid Global Supply Crunch
Europe's natural gas prices have soared to €75 per megawatt hour (MWh), more than double their level a year ago, due to disruptions in global liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz over six months ago has limited exports from the Gulf region, primarily Qatar and the UAE, by over 85 percent compared to last year.
The resulting supply crunch has sparked fierce competition between Europe and Asia for LNG, with many volumes diverted eastward during the summer months. As a result, European gas storage sites are currently around 66 percent full, the lowest level in 15 years, and roughly 12 percentage points below last year's level.
Germany's storage network is only 54 percent full, while storage facilities in the Netherlands stand at just 48 percent of capacity. This will increase both countries' dependence on spot LNG cargoes and pipeline imports from neighboring states, putting further upward pressure on gas prices across the region.
