Europe's Gas Prices Surge Amid Supply Concerns
European natural gas prices rose sharply on Wednesday to levels near their 2022 highs after falling in the previous session. The price surge was driven by persistent supply concerns ahead of the winter heating season, with military tensions restricting Qatari LNG export flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
This has severely limited supplies to Europe, forcing the region's gas storage facilities to remain below their seasonal average capacity at 68%. Typically, inventories would be nearing maximum capacity by now. JERA Global CEO Yukio Kani warned that Europe's low inventories leave it vulnerable to prolonged disruptions and stronger competition for LNG cargoes.
Scheduled maintenance at Norwegian gas facilities is also temporarily reducing pipeline supplies to Europe, further tightening near-term supply. The situation has raised concerns over supply security in the region as winter approaches.
