Europe's Gas Reserves Plummet Ahead of Winter Heating Season
Europe's natural gas reserves are at their lowest level in years as the continent enters its winter heating season, raising concerns about meeting rising demand for energy. According to a report by S&P Global Energy, EU gas storage facilities were only 71.3% full at the end of September, down from 82.5% last year and 94.2% in 2021.
The lower starting reserves leave Europe with less buffer against supply disruptions or increased consumption during colder months. Gas demand typically increases as households and businesses boost heating use during winter, making it more challenging to replenish supplies if cold weather drives consumption higher or unexpected disruptions affect imports.
