Europe's Gas Reserves Plunge to Historic Lows Ahead of Winter
Europe's natural gas reserves are at historically low levels, raising concerns about potential supply shortages this winter. The situation is particularly dire in Germany, which accounts for over 20% of the EU's storage capacity.
The country's gas storage facilities were at just 47% of capacity in August, the lowest level since records began. According to Sebastian Heinermann, managing director of Germany's gas storage association INES, 'storage levels are not only exceptionally low for this time of year, but historically low.'
Heinermann also noted that despite the dire situation, Germany is still relying on a market-driven approach to replenishing reserves. This has led to calls for more direct intervention by Berlin, which so far has rejected such measures.
