Europe's Gas Stockpiles Sputter Amid War-Driven Price Surge
Europe's natural gas storage reserves are woefully understocked, with only 69% of capacity filled. This is significantly lower than the 85% average for this time of year over the last five years, according to Gas Infrastructure Europe.
The lagging pace of restocking has added to economic and political pressures in the region. Germany and the Netherlands, which hold 35% of the bloc's storage capacity, are major laggards due to high energy prices resulting from disruptions linked to the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.
Analysts had initially expected the Iran conflict would end quickly, leading to a drop in prices and allowing companies to restock at affordable rates. However, this bet now appears increasingly shaky.
'Each month that Europe delays restocking raises pressure on prices as peak winter usage approaches,' said UniCredit strategist Jonathan Schroer.
