Europe's Winter Power Surge Hits 60% As Gas Prices Soar
Europe's wholesale power prices are surging ahead of winter, reaching their highest level since the energy crisis. In Germany, the region's largest economy, January power is trading above €180 a megawatt-hour on the European Energy Exchange, up over 60% from last year. The main driver behind this increase is natural gas, which has skyrocketed in recent weeks as Europe struggles to refill its storage amid intense competition for fuel.
The Iran war and closure of the Strait of Hormuz have added to the pressure, cutting off supplies from Qatar. This comes as a stark reminder of Europe's dependence on imported fossil fuels, which repeatedly expose it to price spikes when supplies are disrupted.
Despite significant progress since Russia's invasion of Ukraine triggered an energy crisis four years ago, Europe remains heavily reliant on gas and coal. Higher power costs threaten to push up household bills and business expenses, exacerbating inflation pressures and adding to the economic strain.
