Eurozone Inflation Target Delayed Until Mid-2027 Amid Energy Price Shock
The European Central Bank (ECB) has revised its inflation target due to ongoing energy price shocks, according to ECB Chief Economist Philip Lane. He stated that eurozone inflation will not return to target until mid-2027, citing a second wave of energy price increases.
Lane pointed out that while the current energy shock is driving up crude oil and natural gas prices, it's also leading to higher and more persistent inflation. The ECB has already implemented its second rate hike this month, with markets pricing in an additional 0.25% hike as early as October.
According to Lane, the current wave of energy price increases is putting upward pressure on food prices, broader energy prices including electricity, and general goods prices. However, he noted that pressure on services prices remains relatively contained for now.
