Experts Urge Tech-Driven Pipeline Network for Nigeria's Gas Ambitions

Nigeria's gas ambitions require a robust and technology-driven pipeline network to unlock its vast potential. Energy experts have made this call at the 2026 International Pipeline Conference and Expo in Canada.

According to Dr. Eloho Amagada, CEO of Amelin Projects Ltd., Nigeria has approximately 215.19 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas reserves. However, the existing pipeline infrastructure spans over 2,500 kilometers, and substantial investment is needed to expand the network and meet growing domestic and export demand.

Amagada emphasized that reliable pipelines are critical for various industries such as power generation, fertiliser production, petrochemicals, manufacturing, CNG, LPG, and LNG. He identified ageing infrastructure, insecurity, third-party interference, environmental concerns, difficult terrain, right-of-way challenges, and community issues as major constraints to pipeline development.

The expert suggested moving from reactive pipeline management to predictive integrity systems using advanced technologies such as intelligent in-line inspection, corrosion monitoring, GIS, artificial intelligence, and risk-based inspection. He also advocated for real-time leak detection, fibre-optic monitoring, integrated SCADA systems, drones, satellite imagery, and AI-enabled video analytics.
