ExxonMobil's Hidden Advantage: Early Investment in Scarcity-Proof Assets
ExxonMobil's stock has returned 59.2% over the past year, outperforming the S&P 500 by nearly 40%. The company attributes this success to a Middle East supply shock it did not anticipate. However, a closer look at the company's fiscal Q2 2025 account reveals that several key projects were already in motion before the oil price surge.
The Singapore Resid Upgrade project and the Fawley Hydrofiner, both of which were disclosed weeks before the run began, were designed to increase production of diesel and base stocks. These products became scarce after a Middle East conflict led to a 3 million barrel-per-day reduction in global supply capacity.
ExxonMobil's early completion of the Yellowtail project, which started up days after its scheduled start date, also contributed to the company's success. The project lifted installed capacity in Guyana above 900,000 barrels per day and is expected to fully recover its $55 billion investment nearly two years ahead of schedule.
The company's ability to adapt quickly to changing market conditions has been a key factor in its performance. As CFO notes, the inflection into free cash flow has allowed ExxonMobil to generate significant cash, which is a key property favored by the Trefis High Quality Portfolio.
