Ramesh Slams E20 Policy: Public Paying Price for Shortsighted Fuel Plan
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has criticized the Centre's E20 policy, which involves blending 20% ethanol with petrol. He claims that this policy is making food and travel more expensive for the public.
Ramesh points out that diverting sugarcane and grains towards ethanol production could lead to shortages of these products, affecting their prices. He also says that vehicles not designed for E20 fuel may experience reduced mileage and damage.
The Congress leader cites figures showing a rise in sugar and jaggery prices due to the diversion of sugarcane towards ethanol production. Sugar prices have increased from ₹48 to ₹67 per kg, while jaggery has risen from ₹50 to ₹65 per kg over the last three months.
Ramesh also questions why petrol prices have not fallen despite a decline in international crude oil prices and savings claimed from ethanol blending.
