Failed Wheat Sowings Lead to Rs 1 Crore Annual Harvest for Farmer
Farmers like Baldhir Singh Bhullar are taking advantage of the opportunities in the agricultural sector by diversifying their crops and increasing profits. Bhullar, a BBA graduate and farmer from Ferozepur district, shifted his focus to vegetables after two failed wheat sowings in 2021.
He initially grew seasonal vegetables on a couple of acres, but expanded open-field vegetable cultivation to eight acres within five years. In 2023, Bhullar added five acres under protected cultivation, one acre in a polyhouse and four acres in net houses, to grow vegetables under controlled conditions.
The economics have encouraged Bhullar to expand his operations. Vegetables under protected cultivation can generate Rs 15-20 lakh per acre annually, while open-field vegetables earn around Rs 5-6 lakh per acre from two crops a year.
