Falkland Oil Windfall Sparks International Tensions
Tensions have escalated in the Falklands Islands as oil profits from drilling near the islands surge. The Sea Lion field, controlled by Israeli company Navitas and British firm Rockhopper Exploration, contains an estimated 1.7 billion barrels of oil.
This has led to dissatisfaction among Argentinian President Javier Milei, who claims it's unacceptable that none of the profits will go to Argentina. With Trump now backing Argentina's claim over the islands, reversing a previously neutral position, suspicions have arisen about an agenda to hand control over part of the oil to the United States.
The UK government remains firm in its stance on ownership, with Ed Miliband affirming 'the right to self-determination' of the islanders. Meanwhile, diesel fuel prices have reached a record high in the US due to the war in Iran straining global oil supply.
