FAO Food Price Index Rises on Global Supply Concerns
The FAO Food Price Index rose by 1.9% in August to an average of 133.3 points, driven by weather-related risks, geopolitical tensions, and trade disruptions that have increased concerns over global food commodity supplies.
The index tracks monthly changes in international prices of a basket of globally traded food commodities, including cereals, vegetable oils, meat, dairy, and sugar.
Cereal prices led the increase, rising 2.2% from July, with wheat prices increasing by 2.6% due to disruptions to Black Sea export logistics, lower production prospects in Europe, and a weaker US dollar.
