Farmers Demand Rs5,000 Support Price for Wheat as Sowing Approaches

Pakistan Kissan Ittehad President Khalid Khokhar has urged the government to set a support price of Rs5,000 per 40kg for wheat. This comes as farmers are about to begin sowing wheat and are still awaiting crop policies from the government.

Khokhar stated that farmers cannot afford balanced fertiliser use due to high production costs and falling DAP consumption, which has decreased from 2.39 million tonnes to 1.25m tonnes. He argued that giving farmers the international market price for wheat would result in record production.

Khokhar also highlighted the positive trend in sugarcane cultivation, which has increased by 16 percent to 2.454 million acres. He predicted a 25-30pc increase in sugar production and stressed the importance of retaining sufficient stocks of sugar for domestic consumption until November to prevent losses to growers.
