Farmers Must Choose Wisely as Seed Sales Loom
As farmers prepare for seed sales, agronomists emphasize the importance of selecting the right corn and soybean varieties. Research from the University of Illinois Variety Testing Program shows that yields can vary significantly depending on the hybrid used, with differences of up to 50 bushels per acre in corn and 20 bushels per acre in soybeans.
Experts recommend comparing multiple data sources when selecting seed, including plots, trials, and regional trial results. Farmers should also consider matching seed to field conditions, such as poor drainage or sandy areas, and choose varieties based on disease history.
Giovani Preza Fontes, University of Illinois Extension agronomist, advises farmers to select corn hybrids with proper maturity timing, allowing for a buffer window in case of unexpected weather patterns. Staggering maturity dates can also reduce the risk of damage from severe weather during pollination.
