Fast Fashion Faces Unlikely Threat from Iran Crisis

The ongoing Iran crisis is having an unexpected impact on the global fashion industry. Most clothing items are made from synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, and spandex, which are derived from oil. As a result of the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz, prices for these materials have risen significantly.

Oil prices surged 25% in March to their highest level in nearly four years, with polyester futures in China also experiencing a sharp increase. This has led to higher production costs for apparel companies, which are passing on the increased expenses to consumers.

However, not all fashion brands will be equally affected by this development. Companies that have shifted towards using recycled materials for their polyester products may be better-positioned to weather the storm. Zara-owner Inditex and Hennes & Mauritz are examples of companies with a high proportion of recycled polyester in their supply chain.

On the other hand, Uniqlo's parent company Fast Retailing, which has less than half its polyester derived from recycled materials, may struggle to maintain profit margins. The conflict in Iran is also expected to have long-lasting effects on the global economy, with prices potentially rising for years to come.
