Fed Rate Hike Fuels Stock Market Rally Amid Slumping Oil Prices
Stock markets rallied across the board on Thursday after the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates to combat rising inflation. The S&P 500 surged 1.2%, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.6%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 450 points, or 0.9%, and the Russell 2000 index climbed 1.5%. This rebound came as bond yields decreased, with the 10-year Treasury yield falling to 4.96% from a high of 5.02% on Wednesday.
The move in stocks was also driven by a decline in oil prices, which have been under pressure due to rising tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia. U.S. crude oil briefly dipped below $100 per barrel for the first time since September 11, while Brent crude fell as low as $101. The recent drop in oil prices has pushed both U.S. and Brent crude over 65% higher than their starting price this year.
Market observers praised Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh's clarity and confidence in his Wednesday press conference, which helped to stabilize the market. Evercore ISI's vice chairman Krishna Guha noted that Warsh's statements were 'coherent, confident and consistently hawkish without coming across as crazily so.'
