Fed Rate Hike Sparks Mixed Market Reaction as Inflation Remains High
The Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time in over a year, sparking a mixed reaction from investors. The quarter-point rise comes as inflation remains high, with Chairman Kevin Warsh stating that it's 'too high and has been for too long.'
The S&P 500 initially fell 0.5% on the news but rebounded strongly the next day, posting its biggest gain since early August. The rally was broad-based, with sectors such as AI-related shares, software stocks, airlines, and homebuilding all participating.
Analysts attribute the market's positive response to a combination of factors, including declining crude oil prices and falling long-term Treasury yields. This has reduced uncertainty and given stocks a lift.
However, not everyone is optimistic about the Fed's decision. Mike Wilson, Morgan Stanley's chief U.S. equity strategist, warns that the key risks are 'oil and an unexpected inflation shock,' which could turn what appears to be a modest policy adjustment into a more prolonged hiking cycle.
