Fed's Warsh Faces OIl-Driven Inflation Test Amid Mixed Signals
Jeremy Siegel, professor emeritus of finance at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business, believes that Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh will face a crucial test on Wednesday during his upcoming press conference. The central bank is grappling with mixed signals, including money supply growth inconsistent with its 2% inflation target and rising Treasury yields indicating both stronger economic growth and renewed inflation concerns.
According to economists at ING, the policy decision is far from certain, described as a 'knife-edge' call, with roughly 60:40 odds in favor of no change. A quarter-point rate hike would help reinforce Warsh's inflation-fighting credibility, even if the market expects any additional tightening to be reversed within a year.
Siegel said that investors will closely watch what Warsh thinks about the impact of higher oil prices on inflation and whether he views them as a temporary supply shock or persistent strength in inflation expectations. This distinction could shape investor expectations for the remainder of the year.
