Festive Season Brings New Price Hikes for Indian Consumers
Indian consumers are bracing for higher prices on consumer electronics as manufacturers prepare to implement another round of price increases from October. This comes ahead of the festive shopping season, when demand typically surges.
Air conditioner prices are expected to rise by 5-8% from October 1, while TV and refrigerator prices may increase by 3-4%. The smartphone market is also facing pressure, with an average price hike of 21% in India this year, according to Counterpoint Research. This would be the third broad round of price revisions for consumer durables this year.
The cost burden on manufacturers has been exacerbated by higher raw material and freight expenses, as well as currency fluctuations linked to the West Asia crisis. Copper prices have climbed sharply, reaching $14,500 per tonne, up from around $8,000-$9,000 last year. The Indian rupee has also weakened against the US dollar, adding another layer of cost for companies that rely on imported components.
The impact on individual manufacturers varies depending on their sourcing mix and currency hedging strategies. However, the overall trend suggests a continued upward pressure on consumer electronics prices in India.
