Festive Season Strains Households as Rice and Oil Prices Soar
Rice and oil prices have surged in markets ahead of the festive season, disrupting household kitchen budgets. Essential food items, including rice, wheat, and edible oils, have become costlier due to profiteering by traders who are reportedly forming syndicates to raise rates.
The price of rice has increased by up to Rs 20 per kilogram, with coarse rice prices rising by Rs 10. Fine rice varieties sourced from outside the state, such as 'Kali Moonch' and 'Abba Huzoor', have seen significant price hikes. For example, the wholesale price of 'Kali Moonch' rice has reached Rs 4,500 per quintal.
The prices of edible oils have also skyrocketed, with mustard oil crossing the Rs 200 mark and now retailing at Rs 205 per liter in the market. Soy oil is currently selling at Rs 155 per liter, while rice bran oil costs Rs 163 per liter. This surge in prices has put a strain on household budgets, highlighting economic disparities in society.
