Flare Gas Recovery Gains Momentum as Oil and Gas Industry Seeks Efficiency
The oil and gas industry is facing a pressing challenge: how to stop valuable hydrocarbons from being burned as waste. Gas flaring, a long-standing practice across oil production, refineries, and processing facilities, is increasingly coming under scrutiny as energy companies face pressure to reduce emissions, improve efficiency, and extract greater value from every unit of hydrocarbon produced.
The scale of the problem has become more visible. According to the World Bank's Global Gas Flaring Tracker, 167 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas were flared globally in 2025, marking the third consecutive annual increase. This represents an estimated $54 billion worth of wasted energy.
Against this backdrop, flare gas recovery is emerging as a key technology for the hydrocarbon industry. By capturing, compressing, and reusing excess gas, operators can transform flaring from an unavoidable operational practice into an opportunity to recover lost hydrocarbon value.
