Floods and Falling Futures: Iowa Farmers Struggle Amid Weather Chaos
Grain futures were mostly lower on Friday on the Chicago Board of Trade. Dec. corn was off 4.25 cents at $4.97 a bushel, while Nov. soybeans fell by 5.75 cents to $12.77 a bushel. However, Dec. wheat rose by 1.25 cents to $6.83 a bushel.
In contrast, livestock prices were mixed on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, with beef lower and pork higher.
The weather was a major concern for farmers in Iowa, where several rivers were experiencing flooding. The Wapsipinicon River near De Witt 4S was at a stage of 12.9 feet, just above the flood stage of 11.0 feet. The river is expected to crest at 12.9 feet on Saturday and fall to 11.9 feet by Monday evening.
Flood warnings were issued for several areas in Iowa, with motorists warned not to attempt to drive around barricades or through flooded areas. Residents were advised to stay tuned to local radio, television, or NOAA Weather Radio for further information.
